Caring for Alpaca Wool

Believe it or not, baby alpaca actually has its own stain-resistance built right in. Because of its water-repelling properties, some spills won’t soak in and can just be blotted away. Oil and grease are also easily repelled, and alpaca doesn’t attract dust.

All that being said, you will still have to wash your alpaca clothing from time to time. Here’s how to do it:

Directions

  • Simply soak in cool water with a mild detergent. Never use hot water, as it will cause the fibres to band together and turn to “felt.”
  • Squeeze the garment gently, but do not wring or twist.
  • Rinse well in cold water and gently press out the extra water. Lay flat between two towels and roll to soak up the water.
  •
  • To dry, you can lay the garment flat on a fresh towel or dry on a sweater rack. Avoid leaving it in the sun to dry.
